"A
traditional narrative is a story or plot with a
beginning, a middle and an end, and like its book form
invites us to proceed through the text in a linear, pre-determined
manner moving from page to page, chapter to chapter, towards
an end where the plot is finally resolved."

| It
is in this ordered way of reading that sets interactive
non-linear narratives
apart from the more traditional types as there are an
infinite number of portals through which to commence reading.
The user then navigates his own path around the novel
experiencing the action in his own unique order. Non-linear
texts are not fixed, and the words or sequence of words
may differ from one part to the next because of the shape,
conventions or mechanisms of the text. This is especially
true of collaborative writing projects,
as you will explore later in Hotel
Hamlet and Indian Moon
